LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities in the Philippines have arrived in search of a rare rare drug known asLivalo.(LASVIGAN)
The official website of the National Drug Authority (NDA), which regulates the drug distribution and supply chain in the country, said the suspected Livalo was manufactured in the Philippines by Sun Pharma. "It is a potent and highly effective treatment for male sexual dysfunction," it said in a statement.
Livalo, whose active ingredient is tadalafil, is an erectile dysfunction drug used to treat a variety of conditions. It is used to treat a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, in which the prostate gland enlarges, and erectile dysfunction.
Sun Pharma, the main manufacturer in the Philippines, said it was producing Livalo for distribution to doctors in the country in the hopes of improving treatment.
The drug is available in the United States under the brand name Cialis and in Europe by a different name called Levitra.
"Livalo is a highly effective and well-tolerated treatment for erectile dysfunction, and is available in the United States and elsewhere," it said in the statement.
The official website of the drug authority said it had received orders from the pharmaceutical company for production of Livalo in the Philippines.
Livalo is the active ingredient in vardenafil, the brand name of Levitra.
The official website also said it was supplying the product to the public through the Internet.
"Livalo has a high potential for abuse and misuse," it said in the statement.
The official website also said the product was being offered in different strengths depending on the country.
The drugmaker said it was not aware of any reports of misuse on the official website.
Livalo is known as "Levitra", or "Vardenafil".Livalo is the most common treatment for male sexual dysfunction in men.
It is used to treat the symptoms of BPH, in which the prostate gland enlarges, and erectile dysfunction, which is caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis, the official website said.
